Why Making It Beautiful Matters

July 23, 20256 min read

Once upon a time—not so long ago—it was understood that life wasn’t just about function. It was also about beauty.

We made things beautiful on purpose. Not to impress or show off, not because it was required, but because it brought us joy. Joy to the one who created it, and joy to those who experienced it. Whether it was the intricate ornamental detail in architecture, the stitching on a quilt, the layout of a letter, or the way we arranged our meals or homes—beauty was built in. It was honored.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve forgotten that. Rushed by timelines, swallowed by screens, dulled by utility. We've forgotten the value of beauty. But it’s still in us. The desire to create something beautiful. To live among beauty. To be beauty.

The truth is: making it beautiful matters.

And that beauty is far more than appearances.

What Do We Mean by “Beautiful”?

Let’s be clear—this isn’t about perfection or polish. Beauty, in this sense, isn’t about meeting a societal standard or chasing an aesthetic trend.

It’s soul-deep.

It’s something that resonates with your spirit. Something that lifts your energy, opens your heart, and says yes, this feels good. Beauty speaks to a deeper part of us. It reminds us we’re not just surviving—we’re living. It nourishes us.

That vase of wildflowers on the kitchen table. The soft throw you drape over your favorite chair. The playlist you use to begin your morning. The notebook you bought for its gorgeous cover. The way you plate your lunch just because it pleases you.

These are not small things. These are sacred acts of being.
They are whispers from the Divine Beloved within you.

Beauty Is Divine

Beauty connects us to the Divine Beloved because it springs from love, care, and intention.

It slows us down. It invites presence. And in that presence, something sacred happens—we feel wonder and we remember who we are:

Made by the Creator with love and intricate design. Part of all creation, not superior. Siblings with trees and flowers and deer and ants and bears. Connected. Beauty both expands us and reminds us of our limitations, which helps us remember that we were meant to live from our hearts.

Each time we choose to make something beautiful, we are saying:
I matter. This moment matters.
The way I experience this life matters.
The person who will experience this beauty matters.

And that ripples outward. When you create something beautiful, others feel it too—even if they don’t have words for it. You’re offering them a moment of calm, grace, or delight. A breath of spaciousness.

That’s the gift.

When I first got the glimmer of desire that would become Heart Tru Living, one thing I knew I wanted to do was create beautiful spaces and beautiful experiences. The older I have gotten, the more aware I am of just what beauty can give, what it can do, the silent power behind it. When I design an interior, making it beautiful not only gives me immense pleasure, but I know that the beauty will embrace and hold those who experience it, softening and relaxing them so they can open to gentleness, newness, and more love.

Beauty, like the Divine Beloved, has the power to inspire us without us realizing that's what it's doing.

That's the magic.

What Beauty Really Gives Us

In her book Living a Beautiful Life, Alexandra Stoddard writes:

"When we live a beautiful life, we are choosing to live in harmony with our highest values."

That resonates deeply. Making it beautiful is not frivolous—it’s a form of honoring. Of saying yes to what uplifts and sustains us. It's connecting us to the Divine Beloved, the Great Spirit Who Moves Through All Things.

Beauty reminds us to feel. To care. To see.

It gives us grounding in the present, meaning in the mundane, and inspiration in the ordinary. In times of change or transition, beauty can be an anchor. A way to gently bring yourself back to center. To create safety, softness, and hope.

And in times of uncertainty and turmoil and pain, when grief and sorrow and indignation are so pervasive, beauty reminds us that we're still human and no matter how ugly things get in society, beauty still stops us in our tracks and puts us in awe of something greater than the sum of us.

In times like these, we need beauty more than ever.

So Where Can You Make It Beautiful?

Beauty doesn’t require a renovation or a budget. It requires attention.

Start small. Make it meaningful. Let it feel like love.

Here are a few soulful places to begin:

  • Home:
Clear the clutter. Light a candle. Add a piece of art or textile that speaks to you. Make your bed with care. Arrange your books with intention.

  • Office/workspace:
Even a few inches of space can be transformed. Add a plant. Frame a quote that inspires you. Let your space reflect who you’re becoming—not just what you do.

  • Routines:
Morning coffee in your favorite mug. A beautiful journal for your reflections. Music that fills the room with calm or joy. Beauty lives in the details.

  • Environment:
Open the windows. Step outside. Notice the light. Bring in what you love—fresh air, sunlight, textures, colors, nature.

  • Relationships:
Beauty lives in words, too. Speak kindly. Share appreciation. Write a letter. Look someone in the eye. Choose love over convenience.

How to Start

  • Remove or hide the ugly.
What’s draining your energy when you look at it? The pile of junk on the counter, the torn lampshade, the inbox overload? Start there. Small edits make a big impact.

  • Add beauty you love.
Fresh flowers. A photograph. An object from your travels. Something soft. Something that makes you smile. It doesn’t need to match—it needs to mean something to you.

  • Appreciate beauty more.
Notice it. Pause for it. Whether it’s the way the sun pours through the window or the sound of laughter in the other room. Let it soak in.

  • Share it.
Send the photo. Give the compliment. Write the note. Serve the meal. Making it beautiful multiplies when it’s shared.

Beauty Is a Way Back to You

In life’s transitions—when things feel uncertain or messy or unknown—beauty can be your quiet ally. A touchpoint of calm and intention. A reminder that life is still sacred. Still worthy of care.

Beauty isn’t an afterthought. It’s a way forward.

So today, I invite you to ask:

Where can I make it beautiful?

Start there. And let it inspire you.
